National Carer Strategy 2024–2034

The National Carer Strategy 2024–2034 sets out a ten-year national agenda to support and improve the lives of Australia’s 3 million unpaid carers. The Strategy aims to ensure that carers are recognised, respected, and supported to prioritise their own health, wellbeing, and social and economic participation267.

Key Aims and Vision

  • All carers are recognised, valued, and supported to participate fully in society and in their caring roles.
  • The Strategy provides a coordinated framework for carer policy across areas such as aged care, disability, veterans’ affairs, and mental health36.

Development and Consultation

  • Developed through extensive consultation with carers from diverse backgrounds, including young carers, First Nations carers, LGBTQIA+ carers, and those in regional and remote areas.
  • Informed by the experiences and challenges of nearly 500 carers across Australia, ensuring the Strategy reflects the diversity and needs of carers37.

Six Priority Areas

  1. Recognition and Value: Carers’ expertise and contributions are recognised by government, community, and services.
  2. Access to Supports: Carers can access the right supports, services, and programs at the right time and place.
  3. Knowledge and Skills: Carers have opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills needed for their roles.
  4. Employment and Education: Carers can access and participate in employment, education, or training to improve their financial wellbeing.
  5. Wellbeing: Carers have access to supports that safeguard their psychological, physical, and social wellbeing.
  6. Evidence and Understanding: Building a strong evidence base to better understand carers’ experiences and what works for them6.

Immediate Actions Announced

  • Increased phone counselling sessions through Carer Gateway.
  • Extended hours for Carer Gateway support services.
  • Expanded access to peer support services and carer skills training6.

Why the Strategy Matters

  • Unpaid carers contribute over $78 billion annually to the Australian economy.
  • Carers face challenges such as emotional and mental fatigue, social isolation, financial stress, and difficulties navigating services36.
  • The Strategy provides a blueprint for improving outcomes for carers and ensuring they are better supported now and into the future67.
